The Open Door was designed for people who may feel
uncomfortable in a traditional church setting. Our motto is "Come as
you Are", and members of the congregation are encouraged to wear clothing
that they feel the most comfortable wearing. Frequently this means
t-shirt and jeans.
Music at the Open Door is provided via
keyboard, drums and electric guitar. Our songs are praise songs where
participation from the congregation is integral. Standing, clapping
and really getting into the music are part of the Open Door experience.
We sometimes offer a drama
demonstrating Christian experience (and we are always looking for people
who would like to get involved in our dramas, so just ask if you are
interested). Our band performs anthems on a weekly basis that
incorporate or transform secular songs into a religious experience.
Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month.
The Open Door began as an experiment or
as a vision, depending on your point of view. Either way, it is a
tremendous success. The Open Door is on the cutting edge of worship
services that take this modernized approach to worshipping the Lord.
We have presented this service in several workshops for various members of
the New York and Connecticut United Methodist community (both ordained
clergy and laity), and we foresee that many churches will implement such
services within the coming years as part of the challenge of the new
millennium.
